This is an example of a witness on a stand. Both lawyers normally are given the chance to ask this witness a variety of questions that relate to the topic, in order to try to get an edge in the court. These witnesses are under oath and are forced to tell the truth at all times. Under the 5th Amendment, a citizen is allowed to plead the fif, which gives you the right not to answer the current question given to you.
