As an intern at the University of Maryland, I am honored to work with Dr. James Russell, the head of the Neuromuscular Division in the Department of Neurology at the School of Medicine. This year, I am looking to antioxidant functions in relation to mitochondrial metabolism in diabetic neuropathy. Last year, at the same lab, I studied the effect of mitochondrial transcription factor A (TFAM) on mitochondrial function and its efficacy in protecting the cell against diabetic neuropathy. This past summer, I interned at the American Registry of Pathology and Armed Forces Institute of Pathology under Dr. Bin Zhang in the Department of Infectious Disease, Division of Microbiology, taking cases from Walter Reed Hospital and diagnosing patients of various bacterial infections using RTPCR methodologies.
