Abstract.doc

Vision is necessary to sustain a normal, comfortable life. If the eyes become diseased, action must be taken in order to preserve the remaining vision and prevent complete blindness. This project serves to inform the general public (older adult patients) of the available treatments for age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Macular degeneration is the deterioration of the macula, which makes for a gradual loss of central vision. Because this disease is not curable, it is extremely important to know how to keep AMD from worsening. Many are not aware of the treatments available, so this project will show research about treatments and how they seem to be working in aiding patients. Many new treatments are being studied and tested. The goal is the inform adults of AMD in general and to assure AMD patients of the effectiveness of these medications. An information handout will be shared with patients at the Physician’s Eye Care Center in Columbia, MD. The handouts will be available to any person interested in learning more about macular degeneration. A survey will also be created to these patients for feedback on how informative and effective the handouts are. The handouts will spread awareness of the disease and ways to go about preserving vision that has not already been lost to AMD. Patients will gain hope and reassurance that there are treatments available to help them out.
